The Gloucestershire 11+ is Changing: What the Move to the FSCE Exam Means for Your Child from 2027

Gloucestershire's grammar schools have recently confirmed some significant changes to both the timing and format of their 11+ entrance tests.
If your child is currently in Year 4 or below, these changes will affect them. While any change to the admissions process can feel unsettling at first, there is no cause for concern. Having guided families through numerous curriculum and assessment changes over my career in education, I can reassure you that the key principles of successful preparation remain exactly the same.
At TutorElite, I will adapt my programmes accordingly to ensure every child is fully prepared and confident when the time comes.
What's Changing?
The Gloucestershire Grammar Schools (G7) are introducing two major changes for pupils applying for Year 7 entry in 2028 and beyond.
Feature | Current System (up to 2026) | New System (from 2027) |
Exam Timing | September of Year 6 | July of Year 5 |
Exam Provider | GL Assessment | FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) |
Assessment Focus | Strong emphasis on verbal and non-verbal reasoning | Greater focus on KS2 knowledge, application and problem-solving |
Important: If your child is currently in Year 5 and will sit the Gloucestershire 11+ in September 2026, these changes do not affect them. They will continue to sit the existing GL Assessment test.
The Exam Will Move to July of Year 5
Perhaps the biggest change is the timing. Rather than taking the exam in September of Year 6, children will now sit it towards the end of Year 5.
While this initially sounds earlier, many educational professionals see it as a positive development. It removes the pressure of spending the entire summer holiday preparing for the 11+, allowing children to enjoy a proper break before starting Year 6. For families, it also creates greater certainty earlier in the process.
A New Exam Provider: FSCE
The second major change is the move from GL Assessment to FSCE.
The FSCE is designed to assess how well children can apply their knowledge rather than simply recognise familiar question types. There is a stronger emphasis on understanding, problem-solving and flexible thinking, particularly within English and Maths.
In other words, success will depend less on intensive drilling and more on having a secure grasp of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and the confidence to tackle unfamiliar challenges.
Why This Fits Perfectly with the TutorElite Approach
At TutorElite, I have always focused on developing genuine understanding rather than teaching children to memorise endless exam techniques.
My goal is simple: achievement without anxiety.
I build strong foundations, academic confidence and independent thinking skills that serve children well not only in entrance exams, but throughout their education.
In many respects, the philosophy behind the new FSCE assessment aligns closely with the way I already teach. While I will adapt my preparation programmes to reflect the new format and timeline, my core approach remains unchanged. Children who understand what they are learning, think flexibly and approach challenges with confidence are exactly the pupils these newer-style assessments are designed to identify.
Looking Ahead
Over the coming months, I will continue to monitor developments and update my resources as further information becomes available.
If you have any questions about how these changes may affect your child or would like to discuss a personalised preparation plan, please don't hesitate to get in touch. As always, my aim is to ensure every child feels calm, confident and thoroughly prepared when exam day arrives.
