We have been working with David for a couple of years now, supporting all three of our children through 11+ preparation and independent school assessments. Each of our children has very different learning styles, and David has adapted his approach to suit them individually, which has made a significant difference. An Academic Focus for High Achievement Our eldest has a strong academic focus, with a particular strength in maths over English. With David’s support, he developed his skills in inference, reading comprehension, creative writing, and exam technique, becoming more balanced in his overall ability. The sessions are fast-paced and engaging, which really suits him and keeps him motivated. As a result, he successfully passed the 11+ and secured a place at KEGS, as well as gaining entry to New Hall, giving him some fantastic future options. Whilst he has always loved learning, it has been great to see that enthusiasm harnessed and developed further. Our younger two children require a completely different approach. They benefit from a slower, steadier pace, with plenty of encouragement, humour, and practical examples to keep them engaged. A key focus for our middle child has been building confidence—understanding that mistakes are part of learning and that progress is not always linear. Nurturing and Caring to Build Confidence We have also found that exams and assessments can feel very different for children compared to working through questions in class, and that shift in pressure can have an impact. David recognises this and actively nurtures their confidence, helping them feel prepared, supported, and able to approach assessments more positively. David is exceptionally skilled at adapting his teaching in real time—breaking topics into manageable steps, using varied examples and exam-style questions, and incorporating fun, interactive methods to maintain engagement. He prioritised building trust and rapport from the outset, which has been key to how comfortable and receptive the children are in their sessions. He is also reliable, well-prepared, and communicates clearly with us as parents. As parents, we have really valued being able to discuss school options with David and hear his perspective on what routes might best suit each child. He is approachable, collaborative, and very much feels like part of the wider team supporting our children as they prepare for the next stages of their education. Emma was an absolute joy to work with from our very first session. Clearly bright and thoughtful, Niamh had become anxious about the pace and format of the FSCE 11+ exam.
