My Ethos: The Architecture of Confidence
An extract from David Bell's Headmaster's Address: The 'Jenga' Philosophy of Learning
In 2019 I gave a speech which has become to embody the whole ethos to how I teach and how I believe children learn. I hope these extracts give you a flavour of the strategy behind the love of learning which drives my pedagogy.
"Instead of listing every success, I want to talk about confidence—that vital and intangible skill. Who’s heard of the game Jenga? You have to pull away the blocks until the tower falls. Each block you pull out makes the tower a little weaker."
"Now—imagine playing a game of Jenga in reverse. Constantly adding blocks, each block making the tower stronger, more resilient, more robust. Every time you challenge yourself in the classroom or achieve a personal best, you add another block until your personal Jenga—your confidence—can’t be knocked over anymore. That is what we are doing every day."
