Eleven Plus Exam Tuition for Grammar & Independent School Success
The Eleven Plus Exam is is used in various parts of the UK as a tool to determine pupil placements at a range of selective or grammar schools. Because of the different systems operating in various local authorities, the Eleven Plus is not universally taken by all pupils and the way the tests are administered varies greatly. The tests themselves generally have some similar components: maths and reading comprehension for example, and may include a written component, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
GL Assessment develops and administers Eleven Plus exams in many grammar school areas including Kent, Northern Ireland and Buckinghamshire.
CEM and FSCE tests were introduced in response to a belief that existing exams had become too easy to prepare for. FSCE don't create practice materials and change the format of examinations to reduce what is known as ‘teaching to the test’.
Recently, there has been a shift back to GL in many areas as CEM moved to an online only assessment known as CEM Select.

Case Study: From Anxiety to Band 1
"Niamh's" Journey
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is helping capable students who are being held back not by ability, but by anxiety.
Niamh came to me while preparing for the FSCE 11+ entrance test for Chelmsford County High School for Girls and was an absolute joy to work with; clearly bright and thoughtful, she had become anxious about the pace and format of the exam and was no longer fully accessing the work. Like many able pupils, she was overthinking questions and struggling with her timings.
Drawing on my experience as a former Headteacher, together with my postgraduate research in educational leadership (M.Ed., Distinction) and published work on performance frameworks in schools, I worked with Niamh using what I call an “Achievement Without Anxiety” approach.
Rebuilding Access and Confidence
Our early sessions focused on slowing the process down and helping Niamh understand how to access questions more effectively. Once the pressure of timing was removed, her reasoning ability quickly became clear.
We worked on:
-
Structured problem-solving strategies such as RUCSAC
-
Efficient methods for calculations, including long division
-
Practical techniques for navigating fast-paced FSCE-style questions
-
Building confidence to move on strategically when needed
-
As her confidence grew, so did her speed and accuracy.
Measurable Progress
Mock examinations showed clear improvement across multiple areas, including strong performance in verbal reasoning and improved numerical reasoning scores. The key shift was that Niamh was now approaching questions strategically rather than anxiously.
The Outcome
Niamh went on to receive an offer in Band 1 — the highest band — at Chelmsford County High School for Girls.
Her success reflects what can happen when able pupils are supported with the right strategies and a calm, structured approach to learning.

This skill is essential for effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving, relying heavily on language proficiency and comprehension.
Non Verbal Reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning involves understanding and solving problems using visual information. It includes identifying patterns, recognizing shapes, and analyzing sequences. This skill is essential for spatial tasks like interpreting diagrams and assembling objects.
